Jon’s Story

Jon

My name is Jon. I’m from Providence, Rhode Island, and I’m living with bipolar disorder.

Originally, when I was diagnosed with bipolar I, I was actually misdiagnosed before as having severe depression mixed with ADHD. When I finally got the diagnosis that I had bipolar I, it was a step in the right direction, actually knowing what’s happening.

The mania, to be honest with you, has always been kind of prevalent. I would just be up for two, three days. No…it just, I just kind of felt like I can write this entire book right now or I can climb this entire mountain right now. And then I would have other days that are the complete flip. On the days where I’m in depressed mode, I don’t want to see you. I don’t want to know you’re here. Don’t knock on this door. It can be, it can be a week or so in bed. That’s no shower, that’s no brushing teeth, that’s not eating, that’s no social media. It almost feels like the only solace you have, the only comfort zone is in your little cave. It’s just that it can be very dark, you know, to the point where you, you don’t see a way out, and the only way out that you can imagine is, is removing yourself from this plane of existence.

Medication is definitely a very important part of my journey. I’ve been searching for the right team for a while. I’ve got a doctor that I really feel like I can just open up, I feel like my doctor is like my friend. You know, I’ve had others where it’s just I tell them what they want to hear, what they need to hear. But this one, my doctor now, I really feel like I can call him at midnight, you know? Hey, I’m having a hard time. It’s not my psychiatrist. It’s my, you know, PCP. And with that, I feel like I’m able to open up a little more about just the things that kind of go on in the back of my head that can spiral me in either direction. And just being able to be free to communicate with somebody that I trust about this has really made a hell of a difference. Big difference.

Creative expression is one of the more valuable things, tools I have in my life. Especially when you get into a manic mode. Your brain can just flood with so many things. Food has been a good way to just almost pull it out and put it on a dish.

I have definitely felt the stigma around me being labeled, if you will, as bipolar. And I really feel like the more we talk about this and the more we get it out there, the more accepting people are going to be. It’s 2021 and I think people are starting to wake up that, hey, this is something that is going on. A lot of people are suffering with this. I think that stigma really might just lift after a while, but for now, it’s still there.

I’m hoping that my story will help people start their journey, continue their journey. I can be the guy that you look at, “Oh, that’s the guy that’s managing with his bipolar, so I could do it, too.”

My name is Jon. I am a husband, an uncle, a brother. And I live with bipolar I.
